Ennis

Ennis is the county town of Clare and the closest town to both the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. The branch is on the Kilrush Road, on the western edge of town, right on the route toward the coast.

The Cliffs of Moher are forty minutes northwest. The Burren, with its moonscape limestone and wildflower crevices, starts twenty minutes north. Doolin, the traditional music capital, is fifty minutes away. Shannon Airport is only twenty minutes south.

Ennis itself is a town of narrow streets and good pubs. If you want a Clare base that is not an airport or a tourist hub, this is it.

Questions cousins ask about Ennis

contact us if yours isn't here
Is Ennis a better base than Shannon Airport for visiting the Cliffs of Moher?
Ennis and Shannon Airport are equally close to the Cliffs (about 40-45 minutes). Ennis is a better base if you want a town with pubs and restaurants in the evening. Shannon is better if you are arriving by air and want to head straight out.
What is the Burren?
The Burren is a karst limestone landscape in north Clare. It looks like the surface of the moon, but wildflowers grow in the crevices of the rock. It is a unique ecosystem found nowhere else in Ireland and well worth exploring on foot or by car.
Can I hear traditional Irish music in Ennis?
Ennis has a strong trad music scene. Brogan's Bar, Cruise's, and Knox's are well known for sessions. Doolin, about 50 minutes northwest, is another hotspot for traditional music.
What road do I take from Ennis to the Cliffs of Moher?
Take the N85 northwest from Ennis toward Ennistymon, then follow signs for the Cliffs. The route is well signposted and straightforward. Allow extra time in summer as traffic near the Cliffs can be heavy.
Is Ennis close to Galway?
Yes. Ennis is about 1 hour 10 minutes from Galway via the M18 motorway. It is a quick and easy drive, making Ennis a good stop on the way between Galway and Shannon or Limerick.
