What makes this spot special

your cousin's local knowledge
Letterkenny

Letterkenny is the largest town in Donegal and the gateway to the county's wild Atlantic coastline. The branch is at the Canal Road Complex, close to the town centre and the N13 toward Derry.

Fanad Head Lighthouse, one of the most photographed spots in Ireland, is an hour north. The Inishowen Peninsula and Malin Head, Ireland's most northerly point, are about ninety minutes. Glenveagh National Park is thirty minutes to the west.

Donegal is one of Ireland's largest counties and its least populated. A car transforms it from inaccessible to extraordinary. The roads are empty, the views are constant, and you will wonder why more people do not come here.

Questions cousins ask about Letterkenny

contact us if yours isn't here
Is Letterkenny a good base for exploring Donegal?
It is the best base. Letterkenny is centrally located in Donegal, with good roads to the coast in every direction. You can reach Fanad, Glenveagh, the Rosses, and even Slieve League from here as day trips.
How far is Letterkenny from Derry?
About 30 minutes on the N13. Derry is just across the Northern Ireland border. The drive is easy and the border is invisible. Derry's walled city is worth a visit.
What are the roads like in Donegal?
Main roads (N56, N13, N15) are well surfaced. Coastal roads to places like Fanad and Horn Head are narrower and slower. That is part of the charm. A Compact car handles everything comfortably.
Can I visit Malin Head from Letterkenny?
Yes. Malin Head, Ireland's most northerly point, is about 1 hour 30 minutes via the Inishowen Peninsula. The drive through Buncrana and along the coast is beautiful and makes a full-day trip.
What should I not miss in Donegal?
Fanad Head Lighthouse, Slieve League cliffs (higher than the Cliffs of Moher), Glenveagh Castle and gardens, Errigal Mountain, and the Gaeltacht villages along the coast. Donegal rewards slow driving and spontaneous stops.
