Sligo

Sligo is Yeats country: Benbulben, Knocknarea, Lough Gill, and the landscapes that inspired some of Ireland's greatest poetry. The branch is at Carrickhenry on the Carraroe Road, on the southern approach to the town.

Strandhill beach is fifteen minutes west, and the surfing there is world-class. Mullaghmore and Classiebawn Castle are thirty minutes north. The Ceide Fields, the oldest known stone-walled fields in the world, are an hour away in north Mayo.

Sligo is the part of the Wild Atlantic Way that most visitors skip because it is furthest from Dublin. That is exactly why you should go.

Questions cousins ask about Sligo

contact us if yours isn't here
What makes Sligo different from other Irish towns?
Sligo sits between mountains and the Atlantic. Benbulben, the flat-topped mountain, dominates the skyline. The area is packed with megalithic tombs, surfing beaches, and Yeats heritage. It feels wilder and less touristy than the southwest.
Is Strandhill beach good for swimming?
Strandhill is famous for surfing, not swimming. The waves and currents are strong. For safe swimming, try Rosses Point (10 minutes north) or Enniscrone (40 minutes west), which has a Blue Flag beach and seaweed baths.
How far is Sligo from Dublin?
About 3 hours by car on the N4. The road is good quality, mostly dual carriageway. If you are coming from Dublin, Sligo makes a great stop on the way to Donegal.
What day trips can I do from Sligo?
Mullaghmore and the Classiebawn coast (30 min), the Ceide Fields in north Mayo (1 hr), Lough Key Forest Park (45 min), Carrowmore megalithic tombs (5 min), and Knocknarea summit hike (20 min to trailhead).
Can I drive from Sligo to Donegal?
Yes. The N15 goes north through Bundoran and Ballyshannon into Donegal. Donegal town is about 1 hour 10 minutes. Letterkenny is about 1 hour 40 minutes. The scenery along the way is beautiful.
