Waterford

Waterford is Ireland's oldest city, founded by Vikings in 914 AD. The branch is at Coolgower, on the western approach to the city, close to the N25 and easy to reach from Cork or Dublin.

The Viking Triangle in the city centre is Ireland's most concentrated collection of medieval architecture. The Copper Coast, a UNESCO Global Geopark, starts twenty minutes east along the coast road. Dunmore East and Tramore are popular beach towns nearby.

Waterford is at the heart of Ireland's Ancient East, a region of 5,000-year-old tombs, ruined abbeys, and empty beaches that most visitors overlook in favour of the west coast.

What is the Viking Triangle in Waterford?
The Viking Triangle is a compact historic quarter in Waterford city centre. It includes Reginald's Tower (the oldest urban civic building in Ireland), the Medieval Museum, and the Bishop's Palace. All three museums are within a few minutes' walk of each other.
What is the Copper Coast?
The Copper Coast is a UNESCO Global Geopark stretching along the Waterford coastline between Tramore and Dungarvan. The name comes from 19th-century copper mining. The coastal road offers dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and geological formations.
How far is Waterford from Dublin?
About 1 hour 50 minutes via the M9 motorway. The road is excellent and mostly empty compared to the busier western routes.
Is Waterford worth visiting or should I drive through?
It is worth at least half a day. The Viking Triangle museums are excellent, the Waterford Crystal visitor centre is nearby, and the city has a character that is very different from the west coast tourist towns.
What beaches are near Waterford?
Tramore is 15 minutes south, with a long sandy beach and a surf school. Dunmore East is 20 minutes southeast, a pretty harbour village. Bunmahon on the Copper Coast has a stunning cliff-backed strand.
