Galway

Galway is the unofficial capital of the west. The branch is on the Tuam Road, on the eastern side of the city. It is easy to reach from the N6/M6 motorway and avoids the narrow streets of the city centre.

Connemara starts twenty minutes west. The Aran Islands ferry at Rossaveal is about forty minutes. The Cliffs of Moher are a ninety-minute drive south through the Burren. Galway is the hub that connects all the signature landscapes of the west coast.

The city itself is worth a day or two before you pick up the car. Walk the Latin Quarter, eat oysters at the Spanish Arch, and catch some live music. Then drive.

Questions cousins ask about Galway

contact us if yours isn't here
Where is the Galway branch?
The branch is at the Ballybane Industrial Estate on Tuam Road, on the east side of the city. It is directly off the N6 and easy to reach from the M6 motorway if you are coming from Dublin.
Should I explore Galway city before picking up my car?
We recommend it. Galway is best explored on foot. Walk the Latin Quarter, visit the Spanish Arch, and enjoy the street music. Pick up your car when you are ready to leave the city and start driving west.
What is the best driving route from Galway to the Cliffs of Moher?
Take the N18 south toward Ennis, then the N85 west to the Cliffs. The drive is about 1 hour 30 minutes. For a more scenic return, drive the coast road through Doolin and Fanore via the R477.
Can I visit the Aran Islands by car?
You drive to Rossaveal (about 40 minutes west of Galway), park the car at the harbour, and take the ferry to Inis Mor. Cars are not allowed on the islands, but you can hire bikes or take a pony trap there.
How long does it take to drive Connemara?
A loop through Connemara (the Sky Road, Clifden, Kylemore Abbey, Leenane) takes a full day if you stop for photos and walks. The distances are short, but the roads are winding and the scenery keeps stopping you.
